Information:
National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions in Gambia
(NACCUG) was established in Banjul in 1991 to act as the national
trade association representing approximately 70 affiliated
microfinancing member credit
unions in the country. It is fully registered and licensed
by the Central
Bank.
The co-op acts as a lobbying group, an umbrella organisation
and provides essential training, marketing services and is
the core finance facility for its urban and rural village
membership.
Aims & Objectives of NACCUG:
• To enhance the long-term viability of NACCU through
self-sufficient strategies;
• To fight poverty in The Gambia through capacity
building;
• To formulate and offer the best financial services
to the members at fair cost;
• To preserve the reputation of NACCUG as the standard
financial co-operative;
• To advance and assist the development of viable credit
unions through sound and market based business strategies
in order to compete with other microfinance
institutions.
• To promote Micro Finance and Micro Enterprise Development
Programmes via savings and loans schemes.
Activities:
• Promote and facilitate savings recruitment for Credit
Unions;
• Oversee the activities of Credit Unions in The Gambia;
• Assist the registration of CUs by the Registrar of
Co-operatives;
• Inform grassroots communities about the ethos Credit
Unions;
• Check the financial & management performance of
the institutions;
• Facilitate the conduct of CU's AGMs;
• Distribute policy issues;
• Provide members with general education meetings;
• Develop and review regulating bye-laws;
• Operate the Central Finance Facility (CFF)
• Provide loans & enterprise management training;
• Carry out yearly audit exercises for selected credit
unions;
• Provide bookkeeping training & financial management
courses;
• Provide training for board of directors & committees.

In July 2011 NACCUG became an affiliated member of the World
Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), the global trade association
and development agency. It is also a member on the board of
directors of Gamfinet.
