Information:
Wave Gambia Ltd is a local FinTech mobile money transfer operator
which was first established as Sendwave, an international
digital remittance company in Senegal in 2018 by Drew Durbin
and Lincoln Quirk. Wave Gambia received its licence to operate
in November 2021 and began its operations in September 2022.
As of November 2024, Wave was still selling NAWEC cash-power
tokens on its App for no-fee. In The Gambia, where over half
of the population is without a bank account, Wave is creating
the first financial system with no account fees, instantly
available on-demand.
Wave is increasing its local bank partners' deposits by linking
the unbanked populace to the banks as money collected by its
agents are deposited into bank accounts. Wave has employed
hundreds of Gambians and has enhanced the livelihood of the
agents operating with them. These employees are in every region
of The Gambia, going to far-flung villages in order to give
better access to Gambians for financial inclusivity.
Mobile Money Services in Gambia:
• Deposit & withdraw money for FREE.
• Buy airtime for all networks directly using the app.
• Send money to anyone for only 1%.
• Pay your bills for FREE.
• Businesses can pay their employees, take payments from customers,
collect cash from outlets.
More on Wave:
Wave Mobile Money was the first Financial Technology Company
working in multiple WAEMU countries to receive an E-money
license on the African continent. On 14th April 2022 Wave
Digital Finance, a subsidiary of Wave Mobile Money Group became
the first non-telecom, non-bank operator that is active in
a number of WAEMU markets to be approved an E-money license
by the Central Banks of 8 West African countries. The E-money
licenses from the Central Banks indicates an increasing acknowledgement
of a new period of financial inclusion structures led by Fintechs
such as Wave.
The E-money license allows Wave to directly offer its current
set of financial products to customers. Furthermore, it will
permit Wave to expand to more financial services like trader
payments, credit, savings, and remittances in partnership
with other partners in the WAEMU financial ecosystem.
Wave's mobile money service has already begun to disrupt the
established mobile money industry in the West African Monetary
Union (WAEMU) and to the rest of Africa. Wave’s business model
and technology-driven approach to financial inclusion allows
it to provide free bill payments, free cash-in, cash-out with
a low transfer fee - making it considerably less expensive
than many of its local competitors.
