Review: (African Village Hotel)
The African Village Hotel is a budget priced tourist
hotel which began life as a nightspot called Club
98. It was converted in 1974 into 28 rooms, increased
to 43 in 1975 and rebuilt in 1979. It now has just
over 70 rooms for tourists set in what is aimed to
be in the style of a village with mod cons in the
Bakau resort of The Gambia.
As you enter the small, bustling complex there is
an 85 metre walk which leads you past a
mini-market
and sleeping blocks to the swimming pool which is
the centre piece of the accommodation.
Resembling more of a shallow moat it has a man-made
island in the centre upon which the thatched bar is
built around a coconut palm.
The gardened main walkway continues between offices
and an entertainment area and directly through the
shaded, airy Atlantic Restaurant. From its pathway,
steps drop down to the artificial beach which is a
rectangle of sand on pillars above the rocky cliff
of Bakau mostly suited for sunbathing.
The standard accommodation is compact and simply furnished.
Most are low or round huts, with thin twin mattresses
on concrete plinths. Sea view accommodation and smaller
units are available without a local supplement.
Available board bases as Bed and Breakfast or Half
Board. All supplements and upgrades are per person
per night, based on twin occupancy.
