Review:

Ocean Villa Heights is a boutique hotel in Gambia on 51 Brufut Heights beach (near Tranquil) with sea views.

After just over four years of development the exlusive resort finally opened its doors in early 2014 and has 7 rooms in a spacious building.

The boutique hotel is located near Leo's Beach Hotel & Restaurant on a very peaceful residential dirt road lined by a few houses under development. If you need to go to nearby restaurants and shops you might be best advised to use their on-site transport which can taxi you the 400 metres or so to the main road. To find Ocean Villa Heights just turn into the road right next to the Right Choice Supermarket and follow the signs.

As you approach the front façade you will notice an old style London phone box complete with illuminated lighting but no phone! To the left of it is a small private post box; both are there for effect and gives the UK visitor a feeling of back home. To enter the hotel you have to ring a bell or if you are already a guest there is a combination lock, otherwise just knock.

Once past the main gate you are presented with a neatly tiled concrete front courtyard dotted with a few palm trees. Once up a few steps you enter the high ceiling main reception area which is fully tiled in cool Turkish Caria white premium marble tiles throughout as well as an AC. The one feature which will strike you immediately is the magnificent curved marble staircase winding from left to right and from right to left with solid decorative hand rails on each side.

The quality of the hotel's rooms is truly outstanding and no detail has been left to chance. There is a single room downstairs which is ideal for a single traveller or a couple who aren't too bothered about space. There is a quality, compact shower room with WC and wash hand basin. There is a comfortable double bed, minibar fridge, air-conditioning, TV, wardrobe and ceiling fan.

Upstairs is where the remainder of the other six bedrooms are. They are larger than the downstairs room and come in double room or one family sized room. These bedrooms have all the aforementioned features but the rooms are larger and some come with a dressing table. The largest family room comes with sofas and dressing table. Six of the guest rooms have ocean views.

Going back downstairs you will find a pool table if you fancy your hand at a few rounds as well as the managers office which is equipped with a safe. To the back of the building is the mid-sized cool swimming pool surrounded by a concrete tiled sunbathing and drinking / dining area. There is an outside shower there if you need to rinse off any sea water after swimming in the Atlantic Ocean as well as a toilet for you or your guests. To the right they have a compact barbecue for the occasional al fresco dining.

Further out there is a large garden area measuring 60 metres by 30 metres which is great for outdoor receptions, parties etc. If you want to hang out in this area there is a gazebo styled structure to the back right which is wired for electricity. Beyond the garden is a small flight of stairs leading down directly onto the almost deserted beach which is lined with rhun palms and bushes.

All meals are prepared from their very professional looking kitchen with its gleaming worktops, shelves and utility units mostly made of stainless steel. Right in front of the kitchen is a nice, fully stocked drinks bar with its well polished wood top and a few sturdy but comfortable looking chairs. Behind this is a fairly spacious dining area with tables and chairs. You may find that eating you meals outside might be more appealing just for the sea views and breezes.
