Review:
Sarges Hotel is one of Gambia's largest, best built,
and most efficient economy establishments with, from
the outside, a deceptively uninspiring appearance.
Externally it is an immense, plain, 3 storeyed, courtyard
styled building of 5 accommodation blocks based behind
the Kairaba Hotel. It was originally named Tafbel
Maisonettes after its first owners, Mustafa Njie and
Charbel El-Hajj, who began construction in 1994 and
formally inaugurated it in 1995 with 54 units.
At the front end of the street Sarges is line with
a row of tourist orientated boutiques, a hair dresser,
exchange bureau and an internet cafe. Opposite are
numerous other amenities including a supermarket.
As you enter through the leading drive it gives way
to an unpretentious main reception lobby.
Then onto the main foyer, an Italianate Afro-palazzo
that is splendid by local Gambian standards. Galleries,
African murals and balconies adorn the 2 joined buildings
that encase a grand solarium, mini-garden and modest
sized swimming pool ringed with palm trees.

There is a nearby pool bar, a red-tiled restaurant
and breakfast room. Above the guest lobby and the
1st and 2nd floor suites, an extra rooftop eatery
is appealing with ceiling, sun-screens and lampshades
in bamboo basso, which also wraps its columns.
In 1997, 44 units were added, with the principal suites,
being refurbished in 2001 and stylish with a decor
grey, cream and white; balcony or terrace, TV, air-conditioning
or fan and shower.
A path behind Sarges Hotel leads indirectly onto Kololi
beach. • Half board and full board
availability. • During the winter
holiday season room rates are valid from 15 October
- 15 April but may be subject to change.
• Sea views are available from the east facing
top floor hotel rooms in Kololi. |
