The Gambia Experience
(5-star AITO) is the market leader of the tour operators to
Gambia whose parent company is Serenity
Holidays Ltd. Serenity was established in 1984 and was
bought in 1987 by an Isle of Man accountant Stephen Wilde
and his wife Sandra, who launched Gambia Experience in the
same year. They started by offering a few seats a week. Today,
they have more flights from Britain and more hotels offered
than by any other tour operator; its resort staff is the largest
and most knowledgeable and its commitment to the country is
unsurpassed. In 2008 they celebrated 20 years of travelling
to The Gambia.
Over the past 20 years the owners, Stephen & Sandra Wilde, along
with their staff, have developed a large knowledge of The Gambia,
building relationships with hoteliers and can now offer many
properties or room types exclusively. They have a permanent team in The
Gambia and UK based staff regularly visit the country. Some members of
staff have worked for the company for over 18 years. After the
bloodless coup of 1994 all the other tour operators evacuated their
tourist clients out of the country and cancelled their hotel
contracts. Only The Gambia Experience remained operating a once weekly
flight from the UK. Also after the September 11th attack in New York
when all the operators except Thomson reduced losses by cutting back
their programmes, the company increased their capacity and
introduced 1 more flight from Bristol Airport.
Local Initiatives:
In and around the Banjul suburbs it has provided road signs in the
company colours of green, yellow and burgundy.
Over 12 schools have
been built and equipped with funds raised the the company. Under an
ongoing School Development Project now in its 20th year.
In April 2008 they presented six cheques amounting to
D352,600.00 to six schools in the country. The annual donation forms
part of the money collected from company's customers as
its contribution towards funding school projects in the country.
