Background:
The Banjul Pharmacy began its trading operations
in 1970, dispensing only non-prescription medicines.
In 1980 the chemist expanded its product range by also
selling prescription drugs. Sometime in the 1980s the
inaugural retail outlet was established on Independence
Drive in the Banjul capital with another branch being
opened later in Serrekunda in Kombo Saint Mary District.
Some years later a 3rd retail outlet was open for business
on Pipeline Road (re-named Kairaba Avenue). In the first
quarter of 2000 this branch was moved to Latrikunda
Sabiji.
In the year 1992 the Wholesale Department transferred
to the Banjul Pharmacy Building on Independence Drive
and in 2000 the Gambia's first 24 hour pharmacy was
opened to the public on Westfield Junction. in the Kombo
Saint Mary District.
All of Banjul Pharmacy's wholesale and retail stores
are staffed by at least one Gambian State Registered
Nurse employed by the pharmacy.
All of their medications are purchased from well established
drugs companies based in the EU, UK and India. They
order both generic and brand name drugs in order to
satisfy different income ranges and quality standards.
