Review:
The El Sol Mexican Restaurant in Gambia is nestled just
away from the heart of Kololi Resort in a unique building
which is aptly named the Village Complex. It is among
the top diners in the country and has earned rave reviews
from some of its former and current guests for its great
cuisine. Indeed the food and waiter service is so good
that in April 2010 it won the esteemed title of the
number 1 restaurant in The Gambia and has even received
a Certificate of Excellence from the travel site TripAdvisor.
El Sol has a relaxing, serene ambience decorated in
hot orange and tan colours while the splendid decor
is of first class without compromise. The walls are
decorated in fabulous wooden artwork and splashes of
abstract lines and circles. The dining chairs are comfortable
with cushioned high backs; there are soft, wide sofas
for those wanting to enjoy a cocktail. Near sunset you
might want to eat just outside on their wooden seating
with wide sunshades to protect you from the early evening
sun.
The bar itself is a professional outfit with its fully
stocked shelves of well known alcoholic drinks such
as lager and spirits as well as some famous wines from
around the world. You can also order a nice, refreshing
cocktail.
The Food:
There is something for everyone at El Sol especially
those who prefer something less spicy than their mainly
Mexican cuisine. For example, there is the spaghetti
with shrimps in white wine and tomato sauce. Alternatively,
try the wonderful tapas, lemon chicken salad, fresh
muscles, grilled tuna or Ladyfish with seafood sauce,
Gazpacho, home cooked crab ravioli and stuffed chilies,
hot tortillas with cheese and fresh chillies, grilled
lamb chops with a peas and mint puree. A word of warning:
highly addictive, generous portions!
For dessert try their wonderful chocolate and blackberry
muffin, a fresh fruit tartlet and delicious vanilla
ice cream.
And finally you can finish the evening meal with a cup
of freshly made Irish coffee or Espresso.
