Information:
The GRE
was incorporated in 1982 by Ms. Monika Killi-Cle and
Peter Losen and is an early entrant into the ground
tour operating sector of The Gambia. They lay a great
emphasis on sustainable tourism and they initially specialized
in upriver excursions along the Great Gambia
River.
The tour company offers a wide selection of half day
excursions in the Greater Banjul area. Most trips leave
from Denton Bridge on St. Mary's Island and terminate
with a meal at the Lamin Lodge. These two specific trips
are tailor made for bird
watchers and general nature enthusiasts.
Currently it is engaged in the running of Lamin Lodge
Bar and Restaurant a 3 floor wooden building propped
up by stilts which is on the edge of the Gambia River.
Secondly they run the upper-river Janjanbureh
Camp situated 350 kilometres from the coast in a relatively
unspoilt part of the country. The camp is set on the
north bank of the river facing the 'city' and can be
arrived at by both via the southern and northern road
routes.
Boats:
They have a fleet of small pirogues each measuring 20
m long and are fitted with sails and an engine. Each
boat has a maximum carrying capacity of 40 people and
for the convenience of passengers on board each has
a toilet, kitchen and drinks bar. The vessels are available
for individual bookings or groups.
West Africa:
For the more adventurous tourist they offer tours to
Senegal and Guinea.
Awards:
In the year 2000 they were awarded with the ASSET
Eco-tourism Enterprise Award.
