Though
it is a small country there are numerous things to do
in Gambia if you know what to look for. There are dozens
of places to
eat, some of which are tucked away in residential
areas and thus are not always very easy to find.
There are several nightclubs in an around the main holiday
resorts and the beaches
offer plenty of opportunity to find a quiet corner somewhere
to sunbath is relative peace. Sanyang
beach, which is about 27km for the main hotel resorts,
is a must-see and visit beach. Famous for its relatively
unspoilt golden beaches and is relatively deserted during
the week if you move away from the few beach bars located
there. In
Banjul there is
the National Museum, the July 22nd Arch. Pop over to
Barra on the other side of the river or shop at the
Albert Market which is crammed full of exotic and imported
goods.
Some of the excursions you cannot miss are to Abuko
Nature Reserve where you can spot hyenas, 550 bird
species, vultures lions & other wildlife. The other
wildlife reserve worth visiting is Makasutu Culture
Forest.
You can take a ride on a microlight & view the Gambia
from above, visit the sacred Kachikally
Crocodile Pool where it is said you can stroke the
animals as they are said to be tame or take a camel
ride at Tanji. Further up-country you can take a roots
tour to Juffureh Village as well as visit the nearby
Slavery Museum there then take a small boat trip to
James Island which is not far away. Jinack
Island is a birdwatchers paradise which can be reached
by boat as it is just off the North Bank of the River
Gambia. You can even spot dolphins up close during the
early part of each year. See also interactive map of
other
places to visit. Further
up-river you can visit the Wassu
Stone Circles or the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Camp
on Baboon Island on the river. |
