Information:
The Health Science Center of the American International University
West Africa
(AIUWA) is in Gambia, Fajara, with its administration
offices in the US.
After the endorsement of a charter by the Government in August
2010 the AIU founded Health Science Center. The medical school
in Gambia is made up of five colleges namely the College of
Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Dentistry, College
of Health Professionals and the College of Pharmacy. The Kairaba
Avenue campus began teaching classes at the end of January
2011 with students from 14 nations being present in 2013.
Medical Degree Courses Offered in
Gambia:
The American International University West Africa has a medical
course leading to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree. The curriculum
is founded on the American Medical Schools system and is a
6 year program. The curriculum at the College of Pharmacy
(Pharm D) is a 4 year program, the course at the College of
Dentistry is 4+ years, the Health Professionals course MLT
lasts for 2 years and the program at the College of Nursing
is 3 years long. RN to BSN (Hons) Degree for Anaesthesia,
Paediatrics, Midwifery, Perioperative and Psychiatry are 2
year courses.
Admissions:
The Health Science Center / AIU enrolls students from around
the world as well as Gambians according to their standard
of educational attainment, aptitude in science subjects, and
overall grades in previous education and non-curriculum activities.
There are a number of minimum qualifications that need to
be met in order to qualify for university admission in pre-med,
pre-pharmacy and pre-dental programs. These are:
• GCE "A" Levels or equivalent examinations with
lower scores in science subjects
• GCE "O" Levels or equivalent examinations with
science subjects
• Score 2.25 in Grade Point Average grading system
• High School Baccalaureate
Based on the qualifications and scores assessment by the AIU
Admissions Committee, the following types of students might
be eligible for a place in the upper trimesters of pharmacy,
medicine or dentistry courses:
• Students who have transferred from other higher education
institutions, based on their subjects and grades attained.
• Students possessing Medical College Admission (MCAT) Scores
of 20 or more.
• Holders of GCE "A" Levels or equivalent with top
scores in science subjects, High School Baccalaureates with
high scores in science subjects.
• Students who already have a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc)
or equivalent.
Notes on Admissions:

• Applications for the American International University West
Africa can be made up to 1 year in advance and the deadline
for enrolment is 30 days before the start of the first trimester
• You can pay for your fees by debit or credit card using
American Express, VISA, Discover or MasterCard or by money
order.
Student Scholarships & Financial
Aid:
Each year the AIU has a few institutional scholarships available
which are made to acknowledge high academic performance and
provides an avenue to attract the finest and brightest students
irrespective of economic circumstances.
All scholarships are spent directly on tuition and are placed
into the student's account each trimester by the Student Financial
Services. These awards last throughout the students full academic
course.
Accommodation:
Student lodgings are available at the AIU Manjai Residence
Halls in Kotu and the Friendship Residence Hall. Only rooms
confirmed before the beginning of the term will be allotted.
Because of limited availability, a room is not assured to
all applicants. Priority is given to freshmen.
Electricity and water are included in the accommodation charge.
All rooms have a fan, bed and private shower rooms with WC.
Most are sharing however, single occupancy is subject to availability.
Campus Buildings:
There is an 11,000 square metre second campus located in the
Kanifing Institutional area with 11 modern laboratories, well
24 equipped classrooms, 14 conference rooms, a medical library,
a cafeteria and other student facilities.
